Namibian President commissions desalination plant for Trekkopje uranium mine

13 November 2009

The Trekkopje uranium mine, 30kms north of the coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia began production in 2009 and is expected to produce around 8.5 million pounds of uranium oxide in its 12 year mine life.

Once in operation, the seawater desalination plant will produce fresh water in sufficient quantities to allow energy company, Areva to operate the Trekkopje mine without pumping any water from underground

President Hifikepunye Pohamba said: “We welcome this new venture because it will contribute to the economic and industrial development of our country, while creating new employment opportunities for our people and creating a new source of fresh water, because as we all know, Namibia is an arid country where we need to further boost the availability of fresh potable water.”
