Congress allocates $11 million for water projects

19 November 2009

The allocated money, recently signed off by President Obama, will go to water projects in San Joaquin County.

Of this money, $233,000 will go towards the planning and development of additional Mokelumne River water storage and $484,000 will go towards the Farmington Groundwater Recharge Project which aims to help replenish the depleting groundwater basin east and south of Lodi.

Representative Jerry McNerney said: “These funds are also an injection of much-needed capital in the local economy. Our area needs the jobs that projects like these can help create and save.”

Other money allocated by congress include:
- $314,000 towards the Central Valley integrated flood management study, which includes the Lodi area.
- $394,000 for a study to develop a long-term strategy to address Delta levee issues.
- $4.8 million for a levee stability programme administered by Cal-Fed, a federal-state partnership intended to improve water resources in the Delta.
- $897,000 for a Lower San Joaquin River study.
- $100,000 for the Pinole shoal management study to identify beneficial uses for dredged materials in the Delta.
- Almost $3.4 million for maintenance dredging at the Port of Stockton’s ship channel.
- $484,000 for levee and bridge improvements in the Stockton metropolitan area.
