Water UK noted continually high levels of drinking water quality with fewer interruptions to supply and fewer low pressure problems. There is a lower risk of sewer flooding, leakage continues to fall and there is a growth in the use of renewable energy.
With energy use and greenhouse gas emissions increasing, partly due to water companys’ obligations to pump and treat more water to ever higher standards, there will need to be improvements in meeting environmental obligations, especially protecting biodiversity, natural resources and recycling.
Pamela Taylor, chief executive, Water UK said: “This report highlights progress to be proud of, notably a 40% increase in use of renewable energy. It shows companies recognising the critical role they play in sustainable communities looking after the environment and providing high-quality service.
“The indicators are also valuable in pointing to where we must do more. Water companies can't deliver sustainability on their own in the face of challenges such as population growth, climate change and questions about affordability. They need support from regulators, policy makers, customers and users to go on investing and building on the progress of recent years. All these groups have a part to play in a truly sustainable water industry.”
