Pure's SmartBall technology detects pipe leaks

10 March 2009

Pure Technologies, which specialises in technologies for monitoring physical infrastructure, has developed SmartBall, an instrumented foam ball, for wastewater applications.

The SmartBall is released into the water stream and travels through a sewage pipeline with water flow. It collects data on the condition of the pipeine as it traverses it, detecting acoustic activity that could betray the presence of leaks and air pockets.

“We have been extremely pleased with the SmartBall technology in terms of its accuracy, and how quickly it was accepted in the water industry,“ said Michael Higgins, Pure Technologies’ vice president. "It is an incredibly advanced technology and is able to provide accurate leak information on important mains with minimal inconvenience to the water or wastewater utility.“
