IMO grants Basic Approval for Siemens’ SiCURE ballast water management system

09 April 2010

The Basic Approval from the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) indicates that the SiCURE system is suitable in terms of the safety of the ship, crew and environment

The SiCURE water management system from Siemens combines physical separation with a proprietary process of on-demand treatment with biocides produced in-situ from seawater. SiCURE control logic regulates the water management system’s parameters to provide treatment efficacy, minimise environmental impact, and protect the safety of the ship and crew.

The Maritime Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) of the United Nations’ IMO granted Basic Approval after successful testing of the SiCURE system in freshwater. Final Approval will be granted if the SiCURE system passes saltwater testing.

The last approval stage, Type Approval, is expected to be granted to Siemens’ SiCURE ballast water management system in 2011.
